The Beach Women's Volleyball team wins their big conference opener

What a big win for a team looking to be one of the best in the Big West.

The Women's volleyball team defeated Cal State Fullerton in three sets. This win extends their winning streak over Fullerton to 52 matches. They were lead by Naomi Washington with 15 kills and Laura Schuck with 14 digs. The match was close throughout with 22 ties. The 49ers outlasted the Titans through great defense with 61 digs.

The first set was the toughest, as neither team took advantage of the others mistakes. It took a late surge for the 49ers to take a first set lead. The Titans then had a surge of their own to make it a tie at 20-20 after a serving ace by the Titans' Andrea Ragan. Her next serve went out of bounds and the 49ers took the next 4 points to win the set 25-21.

Washington really shined during the second set. The All-American had 10 kills after the 49ers trailed 12-10. Long Beach State won the second set 25-19.

After two tough sets the 49ers took the third set pretty easily. They lead the entie set winning it 25-21.

Now the 49ers will be preparing to return to the Walter Pyramid to play its second league game against UC Santa Barbra on Oct. 2 before playing Cal Poly the following evening.

The Beach Women's Basketball team finds a winner

Long Beach State Women's basketball team has hired Jody Wynn to be its new head coach. Wynn spent the last five years as the senior assistant, recruiting coordinator and head of scouting at USC. She comes to the team with 13 years of collegiate coaching experience under her belt. While at USC, she was in charge of bringing in 4 nationally-ranked recruiting classes. Last year she helped lead USC to its first ever Pac 10 championship game.

Wynn was once the starting point guard for USC during her playing career. She helped lead them to a winning record during her time playing. Wynn was a standout player at Brea Olinda High School, where she guided the Ladycats to three California state championships. Wynn earned CIF Southern Section and Orange County Player of the Year accolades in 1991 and 1992, while also being tabbed a USA Today and Streets & Smith honorable mention All-American.

Coach Wynn is looking to bring that winning attitude to a program that is in need of a turnaround.
